Cancellation of crossflow instabilities through multiple discrete roughness elements forcing

نویسندگان

چکیده

The presented work introduces a novel cancelation technique, based on the linear superposition of stationary crossflow instabilities (CFI) through application streamwise series optimally positioned discrete roughness elements (DRE) arrays swept wing surface. DRE are designed and arranged with suitable amplitude phase shift to induce velocity disturbance systems that destructively interact, ultimately damping developing CFI. This results in suppression monochromatic CFI, reducing their growth delaying boundary layer transition turbulence.

Streamwise and Crossflow Instabilities on Inclined Circular Cylinders

Observations of streamwise and crossflow instabilities on swept circular cylinders over a range of inclinations are presented. By considering sweep angles through the full range between the two extremes studied in the literature, we relate the streamwise vorticity of the unswept case (Kestin & Wood, J. Fluid Mech. 44) to the more aggressive crossflow instability at high sweep angles (Poll, J. F...

Computational Study of Laminar Flow Control on a Subsonic Swept Wing Using Discrete Roughness Elements

A combination of parabolized stability equations and secondary instability theory has been applied to a low-speed swept airfoil model with a chord Reynolds number of 7.15 million, with the goals of (i) evaluating this methodology in the context of transition prediction for a known configuration for which roughness based crossflow transition control has been demonstrated under flight conditions ...

Passive control of transition in three-dimensional boundary layers, with emphasis on discrete roughness elements.

A brief review of laminar flow control techniques is given and a strategy for achieving laminarization for transonic transport aircraft is discussed. A review of some flight-test results on swept-wing transition is presented. It is also shown that polished leading edges can create large regions of laminar flow because the flight environment is relatively turbulence free and the surface finish r...
